“There’s a new Air about Pennsylvania. Smoke-Free is now the Law!”
The Clean Indoor Air Act, also known as Senate Bill 246, takes effect September 11, 2008 across the Commonwealth. Information about the Act and what it means is posted prominently on the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s website: www.health.state.pa.us. Click inside the “Clean Indoor Air” box to access information by category.
Simply put, the legislation prohibits smoking in most public places, including restaurants, workplaces and a portion of casino floors. It also imposes penalties for those establishments in noncompliance, as well as those individuals smoking in prohibited areas.
The bill allows for some exceptions, which are described on the above website. The form to apply for an exception is also available on that website.
Pennsylvania now joins twenty-four states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, which currently ban smoking in public places.
Montgomery County Health Department is working with the Southeast Pennsylvania Tobacco Control Project and the Pennsylvania Department of Health to promote the implementation of the Clean Indoor Air Act.
